Milestones
Milestones
Published in this Milestones column are intercommunity unions solemnized as well as names of Zoroastrians who opted for cremation between May and August 2009. Births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of August 2009 have also been published in this issue.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
Interfaith marriages number-ed 10 at both the places — OCH and MHADA. The marriage registrar did not bless any civil marriages between Zoroastrians for that period either at OCH or MHADA.
No marriages within the community were solemnized during the 15 day period.
Ten Zoroastrian bodies were cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium and two at Sion during the four-month period. A 101-year-old male was among those cremated.
Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of August. Intimation of only one birth was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 25. Heart disease felled six victims, five being in the 80 and above age category. Pneumonia/lung disease took a toll of four lives, whereas three fell prey to cancer. Two Zoroastrians perished due to asthma, Parkinson’s disease and arthritis. The isolated causes of deaths were septicemia, hypertension, Alzheimer’s disease, old age/general debility, brain disease and hemiplegia. The age range fluctuated between 55 and 98 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the latter half of August 2009, in Bombay, was 79 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
