Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the last 15 days of July 2009.

There were no Zoroastrian marriages contracted during this period.

The last fortnight of July saw the birth of only three Zoroastrian babies — as per the data that Parsiana receives from two south Bombay hospitals. There were 32 Zoroastrian bodies interred at Bombay’s Towers of Silence. Seven Zoroastrians succumbed to cancer — the major killer this time. Heart disease and pneumonia/lung disease claimed six victims each. Five of the heart disease victims were in the 80+ age category. The other killers were septicemia and old age/general debility (three each) and hypertension (two). One patient each fell prey to Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), liver disease and brain disease. The youngest and eldest to breathe their last were both females: one a 24-year-old, the other a 97-year-old. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the latter half of July 2009, in Bom­bay, was 81 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. Names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
