Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the latter half of September 2009 are carried in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 44 and 53 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 49 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 45 and 57 years, averaging at 51 years.

Deaths at Bombay’s Doon-ger­­wadi numbered 30. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. The usual major killer disease — that of the heart — claimed 10 lives, six of whom were in the 80 and above age category. Four victims each succumbed to septicemia and lung disease/pneumonia. Old age/general debility and diabetes claimed three Zoroastrians each. The six isolated cases were: cancer, anemia, cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general illhealth), hypertension, Parkinson’s disease and asphyxial death. The youngest to breathe her last was a 45-year-old female; the eldest, a 98-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of September 2009, in Bom­bay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
