Published in this issue are milestones data primarily of the first 15 days of May 2009.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 36 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 39 years, averaging at 30 years.

The first fortnight of May saw 34 deaths and six births. Six of the 10 patients that succumbed to diseases of the heart were in the 80+ age group. Five victims each fell prey to cancer and pneumonia/lung disease. Brain disease took a toll of four lives whereas old age/general debility and hypertension felled three Zoroastrians each. Among the isolated cases were Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, cervical vertebral fracture, diabetes and AIDS. A centenarian breathed her last, being the eldest to pass away. The youngest to die was a 54-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the former half of May 2009, in Bom­bay, was 83 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
