Intercommunity as well as civil marriages among Parsis registered at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA (Maharashtra Housing and Development Authority) office in Bandra (E) for the period of January to April 2009 are published in this issue. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted from the listing.

The marriage officer at the OCH registered 24 intercommunity and three civil marriages. The MHADA registers recorded 14 interfaith marriages.

Names of those opting for cremation also find a mention here. A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium showed that 11 Zoroastrians were cremated during the four-month period.

Besides the above data, also featured here are births, marriages and deaths that have occured in the last 15 days of April 2009.

As the Bombay High Court is currently on vacation, Par-siana could not have access to the names of those Zoroastrians who tied the knot in April’s last fortnight. The same will feature in our next issue.

Doongerwadi deaths, information for which is supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet, numbered 20 for the last 15 days of April. Births registered at the two south Bombay hospitals (from where Parsiana gets its birth information) numbered a measly two. The major killer was pneumonia/lung disease which claimed five victims. Four Zoroastrians perished due to heart disease (three of them being over 80 years). Diabetes and hypertension took a toll of two lives each. The seven isolated cases were: cachexia, septicemia, burns, Alzheimer’s disease, brain disease, urinary tract infection and asthma. The age range fluctuated between 73 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last fortnight of April 2009, in Bom­bay, was 84 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

If readers have any births/marriages/deaths they would like pub­lished, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
