Milestones

Published in this issue are milestones data primarily of the first 15 days of August 2009.

Thirty-seven Zoroastrians opted to be consigned at Doonger-wadi during the first fortnight of August. The birth figures were dismal, numbering only two. Eleven patients were victims of heart disease, nine of them being in the above 80 age category. Pneumonia/lung disease took the lives of eight Zoroastrians. Septicemia and cancer (four), diabetes (three) and Alzheimer’s disease, old age/general debility and hypertension (two each) were listed as the other causes of death. Shock and haemorrhage due to injury to vital organs, anemia, urinary tract infection and kidney failure were the isolated causes of deaths. A 103-year-old lady was lost to the community. She was the eldest to breathe her last. The youngest was a 41-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the former half of August 2009, in Bombay, was 85 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

If readers have any births/marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.
