Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between the 16th-31st of May 2009 have been mentioned here.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 27 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 31 and 32 years, averaging at 31 years.

Four babies were born in the 15-day period, whereas 31 Zoroastrian bodies were interred at the Doongerwadi in Bombay. (The birth figures are sourced from two south Bombay hospitals, the data on deaths is supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun-chayet.) Lung disease/pneumonia was the major killer claiming six lives, whereas five patients fell prey to diseases of the heart (three being over 80 years). Cancer took a toll of four Zoroastrians and two victims each succumbed to diabetes, Parkin-son’s disease, liver disease, old age/general debility and hypertension. Septicemia, head injury, Alzheimer’s disease, hernia, osteoporosis and anorexia (loss of appetite for food) were the isolated cases registered for the last fortnight of May. The eldest to perish was a centenarian, the youngest, a 51-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the latter half of May 2009, in Bom­bay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bom-bay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
