Published in this issue are births, marriages and deaths primarily of the first 15 days of June 2007.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 20 and 42 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 52 years, averaging at 35 years.

The first fortnight of June saw 32 Zoroastrian bodies being consigned to Bombay’s Towers of Silence. As per the data that Parsiana has access to from two south Bombay hospitals, only two babies were born during that period. Thirteen Zoroastrians were victims of heart disease (five of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Pneumonia/lung disease took a toll of four lives whereas two patients each succumbed to diabetes and septicemia. There were 10 isolated cases registered. They were: gastroenteritis, asthma, hypertension, metabolic alkalosis (excess of alkali or reductions of acid in the body), cancer, urinary tract infection, bronchiectasis (dilation of the bronchial tubes following infection), brain disease, bed sores and Alzheimer’s disease. The coroner’s report was still pending in the case of one death. The youngest age at death was 47, the eldest, 95. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of June, in Bombay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
