Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the last 15 days of May 2007 are printed herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 28 and 31 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 27 and 31 years, averaging at 29 years.

There were no babies born at the two south Bombay hospitals (from where Parsiana gets its birth data) in the last fortnight of May. The Bombay Doonger-wadi interred the bodies of 38 Zoroastrians. Heart disease claimed 16 patients, 12 of whom were in the 80+ age category. Cancer and pneumonia/lung disease took a toll of four lives each, whereas diabetes. liver disease, kidney failure and old age/general debility claimed two patients each. Septicemia, Parkinson’s disease, hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of the face or body), myositis (inflammation of a muscle), urinary tract infection and obesity were the reported isolated cases registered for the 15 day period. The age range fluctuated between 53 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of May, in Bombay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
