Published in this Milestones column are details of births, marriages and deaths that took place in September 2007.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 28 and 38 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 33 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 37 years, averaging at 31 years.
September saw 16 Zoroastrian babies being born (as per the data from two south Bombay hospitals) — a very heartening figure, whereas 74 bodies were consigned to Bombay’s Towers of Silence. The major killer — heart disease — took 22 lives (of whom 12 were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Thirteen Zoroastrians were victims of pneumonia/lung disease. Old age/general debility, septicemia and hypertension took a toll of five lives each whereas four patients each succumbed to cancer and diabetes. Two patients each fell prey to brain disease, intestinal obstruction and Parkinson’s disease. There were 10 isolated cases registered in September. They were: paralysis, arthritis, haeme-temesis (vomiting of blood), kidney failure, haematoma (a swelling filled with blood), liver disease, Non-Hodgkin’s Lympho-ma, osteoporosis (loss of bone density due to excessive absorption of calcium and phosphorus from the bone), bed sores and head injury. The youngest age at death was 48, the eldest, 97. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the month of September, in Bombay, was 78 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
