Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the last fortnight of June 2007 are published herein.

The Bombay Towers of Silence interred the bodies of 33 Zoroastrians. Five babies were born during that period, as per the data that Parsiana has access to from two south Bombay hospitals. Two of the eight patients who succumbed to heart disease were in the above 80 age category. The other killers were: cancer (five), pneumonia/lung disease, old age/general debility and brain disease (three each) and hypertension and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body) (two each). Alzheimer’s disease, sepsis, arteriosclerosis (degenerative arterial change associated with advancing age), asthma and septicemia were the isolated cases registered. A 19-year-old girl was an unfortunate victim of a building collapse and succumbed to shock and traumatic asphyxia. A two-month-old baby was also lost to the community. The oldest to breathe her last was a 99-year-old lady. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of June, in Bombay, was 75 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
