Milestones

Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths occurred in the first fortnight of July 2007.

Six births and 39 deaths had taken place between July 1-15. Heart disease was the major killer taking 15 lives, of whom 11 were in the 80+ age group. Five Zoroastrians each succumbed to pneumonia/lung disease and hypertension. Two patients each were the victims of respiratory tract infection, old age/general debility, cancer and septicemia. There were six isolated cases recorded for the 15 day period. They were: epilepsy, sepsis, empyema (a collection of pus in a cavity, hollow organ or space), brain disease, urinary tract infection and head injury. The age range fluctuated between 50 and 96 years. The Zoroastrian life expec- tancy at birth for the first fortnight of July, in Bombay, was 76 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
