Milestones

Published in this issue are births, marriages and deaths primarily of the last 15 days of March 2007.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 30 and 35 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 32 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 31 years, averaging at 29 years.

The last fortnight of March saw the death of 30 members of the community. Only six babies were born during that period, as per the data from two south Bombay hospitals. Six Zoroastrians each succumbed to heart disease (of whom five were in the 80+ age group) and pneumonia/lung disease. Cancer took a toll of four lives whereas three patients fell prey to diabetes. There were 11 isolated cases registered for the 15 day period. They were: liver disease, osteoarthritis, neoplasm (a new growth, like a tumor), septicemia, pyopneumothorax (pus and gas or air within the pleural sac), quadriplegia (paralysis of all four limbs), old age/general debility, hypertension, paralysis, brain disease and anemia. The eldest to breathe her last was a 96-year-old lady, the youngest, a 57-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last fortnight of March, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
