Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of September. Intimation of only seven births was received by Parsiana from one south Bombay hospital that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 34.
Cancer was the major killer taking the lives of eight patients. Diseases of the heart followed claiming seven Zoroastrians. While three victims fell prey to septicemia, two each succumbed to pneumonia/lung disease, old age/general debility, kidney failure and hypertension. Septic shock, gastro-intestinal bleed, brain disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, sepsis, anemia and malaria felled one person each. A two-and-a-half month old baby breathed his last due to low birth weight. The eldest to die was a 98-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for September 16th-30th in Bombay, was 79 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
