Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the first fortnight of October 2014.
An alarming divide was noticeable in the birth (three) and death (31) figures between October 1-15.
Heart disease took the lives of nine Zoroastrians. Two of those were over 80 years of age. The other killer diseases were: septicemia (five), pneumonia/lung disease, old age/general debility and septicemic shock (four patients each), cancer (three) and kidney failure (two). Diabetes, hypertension and anemia felled one person each. The oldest and youngest to die were both males aged 94 and 65 respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of October in Bom­bay, was 82 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
