Milestones
Data on only two births in Bombay (from one south Bombay hospital) for the 15 day period was received by Parsiana while 30 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet). No couples tied the knot during this period.
Majority of deaths occured due to complications of the heart (13 victims; 11 over 80 years). Lung disease/pneumonia felled three Zoroastrians. Two patients each fell prey to septicemia, brain disease and cancer. Isolated lives were lost due to kidney failure, septic shock, pyrexia (elevation of the body temperature above normal), urinary tract infection, haematoma (a swelling filled with blood), meningo-encephalitis (inflammation of the brain and the surrounding membranes of the brain and spinal cord), gastro-intestinal infection and hyperthyroid (a condition due to excessive production of the thyroid gland hormone). A 97-year-old female and a 39-year-old male were the eldest and youngest to pass away. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians from October 16-31 in Bombay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
