Due to the courts being closed for the summer holidays, Parsiana could not access the names of the couples who tied the knot during this period. The same will be published in a forthcoming issue.
Based on the information from one south Bombay hospital and families who provide copies of birth certificates there were only five babies born. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 32. Twelve patients perished as their ticker gave way. Nine of them were over the 80 year milestone. Other killers were cancer (four), old age/general debility (three) and septicemia and lung disease/pneumonia (two each). Hypertension, multi organ failure, septic shock, kidney failure, brain disease, obesity, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, anemia and leukemia felled one Zoroastrian each. The eldest and youngest ages at death were 95 and 53 respectively. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of May in Bombay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
