Milestones data, primarily for the former half of August 2014, is published here.
Based on the information from one south Bombay hospital and families who provide copies of birth certificates there were only five babies born. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 34. Five of the eight patients to have perished due to complications of their hearts were octogenarians and nonagenarians. The other killer diseases were: pneumonia and lung disease (seven), multi organ failure and kidney failure (four each), old age/general debility (three), diabetes and brain disease (two each) and hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), cancer, epilepsy and mesotheloma (a rapidly fatal tumor that spreads over the pleural covering of the lung) (one each). The coroner’s report was kept pending in the case of one death. The youngest to die was a 60-year-old male; the oldest, a female at 97 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians between August 1-15 in Bom­bay, was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
