Milestones
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 29 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 30 years, averaging at 29 years.
Births cut a sorry figure for the last 15 days of March. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from one hospital in south Bombay that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 36. Heart disease took the lives of seven Zoroastrians (five of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians). Other killer diseases were: lung disease/pneumonia (five), cancer (four), old age/general debility and kidney failure (three each) and diabetes and hypertension (two each). The 10 isolated causes of deaths were: multi organ failure, liver disease, cachexia (malnutrition), hypothyroidism, atherosclerosis (deposition of fattly substances in the arteries), Parkinson’s disease, urinary tract infection, brain disease, septicemia and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body). The oldest age at death was 92 years, the youngest, 42. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for March 16-31 in Bombay, was 80 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
