Intercommunity as well as civil marriages among Parsis registered at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East) for the period January-June 2011 are published in this issue. However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted from the listing.

The marriage officer at the OCH registered 31 interfaith unions and two community marriages. The MHADA registers recorded 29 intercommunity marriages and two civil.

Names of those opting for cremation also find a mention here. A scanning of the registers at the Chandanwadi electric crematorium showed 17 Zoroastrians were cremated during the six-month period.

Besides the above data also featured here are births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in the first 15 days of July 2011.

Six birth intimations were sent to Parsiana, whereas the Doon­gerwadi deaths numbered 31 for the first fortnight of July. Five patients each fell prey to septicemia and pneumonia/lung disease, whereas kidney failure took the lives of four Zoroastrians. Heart disease claimed three lives (all in the 80 above age bracket) and diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and anemia, two each. Psoriasis (a chronic skin disease), fever, cancer, urinary tract infection, hypoproteinmia (deficient protein in the blood plasma), brain disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and ulcerative colitis (an inflammatory and ulcerative condition of the colon) were isolated killers. The youngest to breathe her last was a 55-year-old female, the eldest: a male, two short of his century. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for July 1-15, in Bom­bay, was 81 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
