Milestones
Milestones
Interfaith unions solemnized between July to December 2010 are featured in this issue. Names of those cremated during the same period also find mention herein. Other regular milestones data is for the first 15 days of 2011.
Names of contracting parties of intercommunity marriages are culled from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) in the Fort area and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names of intermarried Parsis that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.
The interfaith marriages at the OCH numbered 27 and at MHADA numbered 17. Six Parsi couples opted for civil marriage (five registered at OCH and one at MHADA).
A gleaning of the Chandan-wadi crematorium registers revealed the names of 22 Zoroastrians opting for cremation over dakhmenashini for the six month period.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 35 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 38 years, averaging at 29 years.
An alarming difference was noticible between births (four) and deaths (37) for the first 15 days of the new year. Six of the 10 who fell prey to killer diseases of the heart were over 80 years. Septicemia claimed six victims, lung disease/pneumonia, five, general debility/old age and cancer, three each, and kidney failure and brain disease, two each. Hypertension, intestinal obstruction, peritonitis (inflammation of the delicate serous membrane which lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities), asphyxia (suffocation), colitis (inflammation of the colon) and bed sores took isolated lives. A five-month-old baby girl was lost to the community. Ninety-one was the highest age at death. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first fortnight of the new year, in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.

Bombay: The Telling figures for 2010
Zoroastrians in Bombay registered 213 marriages in 2010, 81 being interfaith unions and 132 community marriages. Hence the percentage of intercommunity marriages rose to 38 when seen as a ratio of interfaith marriages to the total number of marriages (81:213). In 2009 the percentage of interfaith marriages was 31 for there were 91 interfaith and 201 community marriages, with a total 292 unions. From the 81 who married out in 2010, 52 were males as compared to 29 females. This means that 64 percent males as compared to 36 percent females married out of the community in 2010 as compared to 52 percent males and 48 percent females the previous year.
Data on community marriages is obtained from the Bombay High Court while that of interfaith marriages from the offices of the Registrar of Marriages at Fort and Bandra. The largest number of marriages, 46, were in the month of December 2010 when there were 29 community and 17 interfaith marriages. In contrast the fewest marriages, five, were in the months of August (three community and two interfaith) and September (one community and four interfaith). The average age of brides in 2010 was 28 as against 25 the previous year and that of grooms was 30 as against 27 in the year prior. In 2010, the eldest among brides was a 47-year-old woman and that among males was a 53-year-old man while the youngest was an 18-year-old woman and 21-year-old man.
Comprehensive birth figures for last year are yet not released by the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) but as per Parsiana records there were 116 births (67 boys and 49 girls). The 2009 figures released by the BMC had indicated 182 births in the community, reported Cawas Panthaky, senior executive — welfare, of the Bombay Parsi Punchayet (BPP).
The number of deaths in the Bombay community increased by 141 from 792 in 2009 to 933 in 2010. Of these, 898 were consigned to the dakhmas and 35 were cremated. The year prior there were 758 who opted for dakhmenashini and 34 for cremation (as per figures from the Chandanwadi crematorium in south Bombay since data is not collected from the five other crematoria in Bombay). Among those consigned to the dakhmas, 434 were males and 464 were females as versus 401 males and 357 females in the previous year. As compared to 15 males and 20 females who opted for cremation in 2010, the year prior had 17 males and 17 females. Information on those consigned to the dakhmas is sent to us by the BPP.
The average age at death in 2010 was 75 as compared to 79 in 2009. The eldest to die was a 105-year-old woman. The maximum number of deaths are in the monsoon months of August, 91, and September, 93 while November saw the fewest number of deaths, 54.
Presented below are the 2010 figures pertaining to the Zoroastrian community in Bombay based on records available with Parsiana:
