Milestones

Interfaith unions solemnized between July to September 2011 are featured in this issue. Names of those cremated during the same period also find mention herein. Other regular milestones data is for the month of October.

Names of contracting parties of intercommunity marriages are culled from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) in the Fort area and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names of intermarried Parsis that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.

The interfaith marriages at the OCH numbered six and at MHADA numbered seven. Four Parsi couples opted for civil marriage (three registered at OCH and one at MHADA).

A gleaning of the Chandan-wadi crematorium registers revealed the names of 11 Zoroastrians opting for cremation over dakhmenashini for the three month period.

Twelve births and 57 deaths occured in October. Eleven patients died due to diseases of the heart, five being over the age of 80. Cancer took a toll of seven lives and septicemia, six, whereas five victims each fell prey to diseases of the lungs and brain. Four Zoroastrians each succumbed to liver disease and old age/general debility. Parkinson’s disease and anemia claimed two lives each. Among the 12 isolated causes of deaths were asphyxia (suffocation), hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), diabetes, hyponatremia (decreased sodium in the blood), dementia, bed sores, mutli organ failure, hernia, Alzheimer’s disease, cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general ill health), cellulitis (inflammation of connective tissues) and hypertension. A stillborn baby and a centenarian at 101 years were lost to the community. In the case of one death, the coroner’s report was kept pending. The youngest to breathe his last was a 47-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for October, in Bom­bay, was 76 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases. The names of intermarried couples and those opting for cremation are published every three-four months.
