Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the first fortnight of June 2011.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 46 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 56 years, averaging at 33 years.

Births cut a dismal figure for the period of June 1-15. Intimation of only one birth was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. On the other hand deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 45. Sixteen lives were lost to heart disease (of them 10 were 80 years and above). Septicemia claimed seven victims and lung disease/pneumonia, five. Three Zoroastrians each fell prey to brain disease, kidney failure and cancer, whereas arthritis and anemia claimed two patients each. Liver disease, malaria and diabetes took isolated lives. A stillborn baby boy was also lost to the community. The youngest and eldest to breathe their last were both females: one aged 52, the other 98. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first 15 days of June, in Bom­bay, was 82 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
