Milestones

Milestones data, primarily for the latter half of July 2011, is published here.

Five births and 22 deaths occured between July 16 and 31, 2011. Three of the five who succumbed to heart disease were in the 80+ age category. Pneumonia/lung disease and cancer claimed four victims each whereas two Zoroastrians each fell prey to brain disease and anemia. Hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyroid secretion), hernia, septicemia. old age/general debility and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma claimed isolated lives. The eldest and youngest to breathe their last were both females — at 95 and 44 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last fortnight of July, in Bom­bay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
