“Remembering Dadaji”

Your item on Dr Dinshah K. Mehta ("Remembering Dadaji,” Events and Personalities, Parsiana, July 21, 2011) makes no mention of his wife, Goolben Mehta, a tower of strength both for her husband and the rest of the family. Gool was the maternal aunt of my mother Khorshed Wadia Ezekiel, now 84, and was a staunch Gandhian who walked behind the Mahatma on his famous Dandi salt march.

I am also sending you two photos. One depicts Mehta after shooting a man-eating panther. Also in the photo are son Ardeshir and daughter Shireen as well as (in dark glasses, back center) Jai Prakash Narain and Lady Isobel Stafford Cripps. The other photo depicts my grand aunt with the cub — now fully grown — of the killed panther which the family adopted and kept as a pet at home. It is a remarkable photo and the pride of our family.
