Babies born, marriages solemnized and deaths that occurred between May 1 and 15, 2011 have been mentioned herewith.

Access to the marriages list was not possible as the liaison person at the Bombay High Court was unavailable. The same shall be published in the next issue.

Twenty-three Zoroastrians had their last rites performed at Bombay’s Towers of Silence between the first 15 days of May. In comparison only two births had taken place. Eight victims succumbed to heart related diseases, four being over the age of 80. The other killers were: cancer (four), kidney failure, lung disease/pneumonia, old age/general debility and urinary tract infection (two each). Single causes of death were: multi organ failure, brain disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes. The age range fluctuated between 69 and 98 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first fortnight of May, in Bom­bay, was 82 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
