Published in this Milestones column are births, marriages and deaths that occurred primarily in the second fortnight of March 2011.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 29 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 30 and 36 years, averaging at 33 years.

Birth figures were dismal for the second half of March! Only a single birth was recorded at one of the two hospitals that send in birth details as versus 41 deaths! The major killer (heart disease) claimed 14 victims (10 of whom were in the 80 and above age bracket). The other killers were cancer (seven) and pneumonia/lung disease (six). Four patients fell prey to kidney failure and gangrene, anemia and septicemia took the lives of two Zoroastrians each. Brain disease, old age/general debility, hypertension and diabetes were the isolated cases registered. The youngest loss to the community was a 40-year-old male; the eldest, a 98-year-old female. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the last 15 days of March, in Bom­bay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
