Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the latter half of May 2011.

Names of those married were unavailable from the Bombay High Court as the contact person is on leave.

Nine births vs 34 deaths was the ratio for the last 15 days of May. Diseases of the heart claimed 13 lives of whom six were octogenarians and nonagenarians. The other killers were: old age/general debility (four), septicemia (three) and haema­temesis (vomiting of blood), cancer, urinary tract infection and kidney failure (two each). Brain disease, diabetes, pneumonia/lung disease, dehydration, multi organ failure and liver disease took the lives of one Zoroastrian each. The youngest and eldest to breathe their last were both females: one aged 56, the other 92. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for May 16-31, 2011, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
