This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the former half of March 2011.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 47 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 30 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 54 years, averaging at 33 years.

Only four births were registered during the first 15 days of March at the two south Bombay hospitals that send in birth details to Parsiana. Of the 28 bodies that were consigned to the Towers of Silence in Bombay, seven (of them six were above 80 years) were victims of heart disease, whereas five fell prey to lung disease/pneumonia. Cancer claimed three Zoroastrians and diabetes, two. Isolated causes of death were Parkinson’s disease, malaria, kidney failure, shock and haemorrhage due to multiple traumatic fractures, sepsis, bed sores, dementia (deterioration of mental facilities), hypertension, old age/general debility, multiple organ failure and anemia. One decomposed body was kept pending for the coroner’s report. The age range fluctuated between 50 and 94 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the first fortnight of March, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom­bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
