Published in this issue are milestones data primarily of the first 15 days of September 2009.

There were no Zoroastrian marriages contracted during this period

Data on only four births in Bombay for the 15-day period was received by Parsiana while 36 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Pun-chayet). Heart disease claimed seven Zoroastrians, of whom three were in the 80 and above age group. Six victims fell prey to cancer and four to septicemia. Diabetes and kidney failure felled three patients each and two each succumbed to old age/ general debility, brain disease and gastroenteritis. There were seven isolated cases registered. They were: hyponatremia (decreased sodium in the blood), urinary tract infection, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), diverticulitis (inflammation of a pouch or sac protruding from the wall of a tube or hollow organ), paraplegia (paralysis of the lower limbs), liver disease and head injury. The age range fluctuated between 48 and 96 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the former half of September 2009, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
