Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the former half of June 2009 are carried in this issue.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 26 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 25 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 20 and 25 years, averaging at 22 years.

Births in the first half of June were dismal — only two. Among the major killer diseases to which seven out of the 41 Zoroastrians succumbed was pneumonia/lung disease. Six victims each perished due to heart disease (of which five were above 80 years) and cancer. The other killers were kidney failure and septicemia (three each) and hypertension (two). There were 13 isolated cases registered. They were: old age/general debility, brain disease, obesity, asphyxia, liver disease, Parkinson’s disease, jaundice, prostate, diabetes, multi organ failure, urinary tract infection, haemorrhage in right ganlio and gangrene. A stillborn baby girl was also lost to the community. The eldest and youngest to breathe their last were at the extreme — a 107-year-old lady and a 4½-month-old baby boy. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of June 2009, in Bom­bay, was 73 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. Names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
