Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the former half of July 2009 are carried in this issue.

There were no Zoroastrian marriages contracted during this period.

Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of July. Intimation of only five births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doonger­wadi numbered 31. Five of the 10 victims who fell prey to heart disease — the major killer — were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Diseases of the brain and lungs felled four patients each, whereas old age/general debility claimed three lives. Two Zoroastrians each succumbed to septicemia and hypertension. Epilepsy, peptic ulcer, kidney failure, diabetes, urinary tract infection, Par­kinson’s disease and cancer were the isolated cases registered. The age range fluctuated between 47 and 97 years. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for the former half of July 2009, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. Names of the deceased are supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
