Milestones

Milestones data, primarily for the second half of January 2009, is published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between ­23 and 42 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 36 years, averaging at 29 years.

There were four babies born in the latter half of January 2009 versus 33 bodies that were interred at Bombay’s Towers of Silence. Heart disease took the lives of seven Zoroastrians, three being in the 80+ age group. Five patients fell prey to hypertension. Cancer, old age/general debility and pneumonia/lung disease claimed four lives each whereas septicemia took of toll of two. Isolated cases noted were oropharyngeal secretions, diabetes, kidney failure, dehydration, anemia, head injury and liver disease. A 102-year-old lady was the eldest to breathe her last as versus the youngest, a 52-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of January, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
