Babies born and marriages solemnized between the 16th and 31st of March 2009 have been mentioned in this column.

We were unable to publish the names of those deceased in the first fortnight of March in our April 21st issue due to the ongoing election coverage. The complete death list for the month of March 2009 is published below.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 29 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 58 years, averaging at 33 years.

The two south Bombay hospitals which report to us on Zoroastrian births registered only two new lives for the last fortnight of March. There were 55 Zoroastrians who opted for dakhmenashini in March. Fourteen perished due to heart disease (the major killer). Of them, nine were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Lung disease/pneumonia claimed nine lives whereas seven victims fell prey to cancer. Hypertension, kidney failure and old age/general debility felled four patients each. Three lives were lost to brain disease and two each to bed sores and liver disease. The seven isolated cases were: hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), diabetes, emphysema (gaseous distension of the tissues), malarial fever, septicemia, hypercapnia (excessive CO2 in the blood) and multi organ failure. The age range fluctuated between 39 (the youngest age at death) and 103 years (the highest age at death). The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for March 2009, in Bom­bay, was 76 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

CORRECTION

In our Milestones column of the April 7, 2009 issue it was erroneously printed under Baroda births as: "A boy, Malcolm, to Mahafrin and Behram Ginwalla on August 4, 2008.” The news was sourced from Zend, (Vol 11 No 38, February 2009), the newsletter of the Shree Parsi Panchayat, Vadodara.

The information should correctly read as: "A boy, Malcolm, to Mahazarin and Behram Gin-walla in Cleveland, Ohio on Aug-ust 3, 2008.” The error is regretted.
