Milestones

Interfaith unions solemnized between October to December 2008 are featured in this issue. Names of those cremated during the same period also find mention herein. Other regular milestones data is for the period of February 1-15, 2009.

Names of contracting parties of intercommunity marriages are culled from the registers at the Old Customs House (OCH) in the Fort area and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names of intermarried Parsis that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been omitted from the list.

The interfaith marriages at the OCH numbered 15 and at MHADA numbered 11. Four Parsi couples opted for civil marriage (two each registered at OCH and MHADA respectively).

A gleaning of the Chandan-wadi crematorium registers revealed the names of six Zoroastrians opting for cremation over dakhmenashini for the three month peirod.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between ­21 and 38 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 41 years, averaging at 30 years.

Thirty-five Doongerwadi deaths versus four births were recorded in the first fortnight of February. Thirteen persons perished due to heart diseases — seven of them being in the 80 and over age group. Four Zoroastrians each succumbed to diabetes, brain disease and septicemia, while three fell prey to hypertension. Head injury, cancer and lung disease/pneumonia claimed two victims each. Obesity, Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure and multi organ failure were the singular cases registered for the first 15 days of February. The age range fluctuated between 45 and 97 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first fortnight of February, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
