Milestones
Milestones
Published in this Milestones column are intercommunity unions solemnized as well as names of Zoroastrians who opted for cremation between July and September 2008. Births, marriages and deaths that occurred in the second fortnight of October 2008 have also been published in this issue.
Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.
The OCH registers revealed eight interfaith and four civil marriages whereas at MHADA, the marriage officer blessed three intercommunal unions.
At the Chandanwadi crematorium eight Zoroastrian bodies were cremated during the three-month period.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 27 and 28 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 31 years, averaging at 28 years.
Thirty Doongerwadi deaths versus four births were recorded between October 16-31. (The death list is supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet and births are sent by two south Bombay hospitals.) Three patients of the nine who died due to heart disease were in the 80 above age group. Four deaths were attributed to pneumonia/lung disease, three each to old age/general debility and liver disease and two each to cancer and septicemia. The six isolated cases registered were: Alzheimer’s disease, hypertension, vomiting, brain disease, high fever and hypovolemia (diminished total quantity of blood). In the case of one death, the coroner’s report was kept pending. The age range fluctuated between 50 and 98 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of October, in Bombay, was 77 years. The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
If readers have any births/ marriages/deaths they would like published, some proof to ensure the veracity of the report would be required. We are sure our readers would appreciate this requirement and cooperate with us.

Intercommunity Marriages – 44 percent
The number of Parsis/Iranis marrying outside the faith (56) has reached a peak of 44 percent for the period January 2008 to September 2008. The number of community marriages was 71. The percentage is expected to change once the year ends as the maximum number of marriages take place in the months of October, November and December. The year 2008 being a leap year may also account for the lower figure of community marriages as many couples believe it is inauspicious to be married in a leap year. The number of men marrying out was 36 and the number of women marrying out was 20.
The community marriage data is collected from the Bombay High Court and interfaith marriages from Old Customs House and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East).
