Milestones

Babies born, marriages solem-nized and deaths that primarily occurred between the 1st and 15th of April 2008 have been mentioned herewith. Interfaith marriages between January to March 2008 as well as names of Zoroastrians who were cremated during the period have also been published in this issue.

Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.

Interfaith unions numbered 18 at OCH and nine at MHADA. There was only one civil marriage solemnized between Zoroastrians at OCH.

Thirteen Zoroastrians did not wish to be consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence and opted to be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium during the three month period.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 28 and 47 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides being 37 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 29 and 59 years, averaging at 44 years.

Births cut a sorry figure for the first 15 days of April. Intimation of only five births was received by Parsiana from the two hospitals in south Bombay that send in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doon-ger­wadi numbered 26. The usual major killer — heart disease — took the lives of seven Zoroastrians, five of whom were in the 80 and above age group. Six patients succumbed to cancer while pneumonia/lung disease felled four. Ten isolated cases were registered for the 15-day period. They were: kidney failure, gastrointestinal haemorrhage, brain disease, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body, usually resulting from a cerebrovascular accident on the opposite side), dementia, Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, septicemia, hypoproteinmia (deficient protein in the blood plasma from dietary deficiency or excessive excretion) and emphy-semia (gaseous distension of the tissues). The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of April 2008, in Bom­bay, was 79 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
