Milestones

This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily for the latter half of February 2009.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 23 and 59 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 59 years, averaging at 29 years.

According to the death list which is sent to Parsiana by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet, there were 24 bodies consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence. The two south Bombay hospitals which report to us on Zoroastrian births registered three new lives. Heart disease, as usual the major killer, felled 10 patients — four of whom were octogenarians and nonagenarians. The other killers were cancer and septicemia (three each) and pneumonia/lung disease (two). The isolated cases registered were kidney failure, multi organ failure, asthma, hypopituitarism (tumor of the pituitary gland) and diabetes. The final opinion of the coroner was still pending in the case of one death. The age range fluctuated between 58 and 92 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the last 15 days of February, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
