Milestones

Babies born, marriages solem-nized and deaths that primarily occurred between the 1st and 15th of February 2010 have been mentioned herewith. Interfaith marriages taken place between September to December 2009 as well as names of Zoroastrians who have opted for cremation as their last funerary rites have also been published in this issue.

Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.

Interfaith unions numbered 22 at the OCH office and 13 at MHADA, whereas only two civil marriages were blessed at OCH.

Nine Zoroastrians did not wish their bodies to be consigned to the Bombay Doongerwadi and opted to be cremated at the Chan-danwadi crematorium during the four month period.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 29 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 26 and 41 years, averaging at 30 years.

Forty-two Zoroastrian bodies were interred at the Bombay Towers of Silence for the first fortnight of February. Four birth announcements were received by Parsiana from the two south Bombay hospitals that send us birth details. Heart disease, the major killer, claimed 15 lives, of whom 13 were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Seven victims fell prey to pneumonia/lung disease, five to cancer, three to old age/general debility and two to septicemia. There were nine isolated cases registered: Parkinson’s disease, hypertension, atherosclerosis (deposition of fatty substances in the arteries), multi organ failure, peritonitis (inflammation of the delicate serous membrane which lines the abdominal and pelvic cavities and also covers the organs contained in them), anoxia (no oxygen in the tissues), hemiparesis (a slight paralysis or weakness of one half of the face or body), diabetes and anemia. In the case of one death, the viscera was preserved and the coroner’s report was kept pending. A 13-year-old youth was also lost to the community. The eldest to breathe his last was a 99-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoro-astrians for the first 15 days of February, in Bom­bay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. The names of the deceased are supplied by the Bom-bay Parsi Pun­chayet. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
