This issue publishes births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the first 15 days of February 2008.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 24 and 44 years, the arithmetic mean — the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides — being 32 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 28 and 53 years, averaging at 36 years.

As compared to the death count of 57, births numbered only a dismal five for the first fortnight. There were two major killers: heart disease and old age/general debility claiming 10 lives each. Six of the 10 patients (who succumbed to heart disease) were in the above 80 category. Lung disease/pneumonia and hypertension took a toll of six lives each. Five victims fell prey to brain disease, while four each succumbed to cancer and septicemia. Three Zoroastrians fell prey to kidney failure and two to diabetes. Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, haemoptysis (the coughing up of blood), vertigo, peritonitis (inflammation of the serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity), hernia, arthritis, anemia, polytrauma and Parkinson’s disease were the isolated cases registered. Ninety-nine was the highest age at death, the lowest — 54 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for February 1-15, in Bom­bay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju­mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
