This column publishes milestones within the Zoroastrian community primarily of the former half of August 2007.

The death list recorded 43 deaths whereas six babies were born in the 15-day period. Twelve Zoroastrians were the victims of heart disease. Seven of them were in the 80 and above age group. Four patients each fell prey to lung disease/pneumonia and hypertension and three each to septicemia, cancer and diabetes. General debility/old age, brain disease and liver disease took a toll of two lives each. Generalized emaciation (excessive leanness, or wasting of body tissue), kidney failure, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, oesophageal stenosis (narrowing of the oesophagus), Parkinson’s disease, pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), head injury and multiple bone fracture were some of the isolated cases registered for the first 15 days of August. The youngest to breathe her last was a 57-year-old lady, the eldest — a 99-year-old male. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first fortnight of August, in Bombay, was 78 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju­mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
