Milestones
Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the first 15 days of April 2007 are published herein.
The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 25 and 29 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 29 and 32 years, averaging at 30 years.
As per the data from two south Bombay hospitals there were four births reported for the first half of April 2007 as versus 23 deaths. Seven Zoroastrians fell prey to the major killer, heart disease, of whom three were in the 80+ age category. The other killers were liver disease, nervous disorder and cancer, each claiming two lives. Ten isolated cases were registered. They were: hypertension, diabetes, kidney failure, pneumonia/lung disease, septicemia, brain disease, old age/general debility, anemia, septic shock and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas). The coroner’s report was kept pending in the case of one death. The age range fluctuated between 50 and 99 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the former half of April, in Bombay, was 77 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.

The birth figures for 2006 obtained from the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) courtesy Cawas Panthaki, senior executive (welfare), Bombay Parsi Punchayet shows 180 births for the year of which 93 are male and 87 female. Parsiana’s data from Breach Candy Hospital and from forms submitted by patients at the B. D. Petit Parsee General Hospital and other individuals was 132. The death figure for 2006 as per BMC records is 688. The death figure compiled by the BPP is higher at 773 as these figures include deaths in Thana, Virar and neighboring areas that may or may not have a functioning dakhma. They exclude those who are cremated which would be included in the BMC total.
Thus the number of deaths in Bombay over births totals 688 – 180 = 508.
The BMC also gave Panthaki the monthly birth figures which show the largest number of births was in December 2006 and the lowest in January 2006.
