Details of births, marriages and deaths that took place in October 2007 are published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 50 and 25 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 33 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 62 and 27 years, averaging at 36 years.

As per the data on births that Parsiana gets from two south Bombay hospitals once again the figures were very heartening — 13 births were recorded in the month of October. Seventy-one Zoroastrians perished in the same month. Fifteen patients succumbed to heart disease, of whom nine were in the over 80 age category. Hypertension claimed 10 lives, whereas eight victims fell prey to cancer and diabetes claimed seven. The other killers were lung disease/pneumonia (six), old age/general debility (four) and hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body),cachexia (a state of constitutional disorder, malnutrition and general ill-health), brain disease, urinary tract infection and septicemia (two Zoroastrians each). Among the isolated cases were Par-kinson’s disease, haemorrhage, dehydration, liver disease, high blood pressure, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, intestinal bleed, hypothyroidism (a group of symptoms caused by the deficiency of thyriod secretion), arthritis, multi organ failure and kidney failure. A 54-year-old male was an unfortunate victim of a road accident. In the case of one death the viscera was kept pending for histopathological and chemical analysis. The age range fluctuated between 53 and 98 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the month of October, in Bombay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
