Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the first 15 days of March 2007 are published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 21 and 34 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 26 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 23 and 41 years, averaging at 30 years.

The first fortnight of March saw 33 Zoroastrians bodies being consigned to Bombay’s Towers of Silence. As per the data that Parsiana has access to from two south Bombay hospitals, only four babies were born during that period. Six victims fell prey to heart disease of whom three were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Pneumonia/lung disease and cancer took a toll of five lives each whereas four Zoroastrians succumbed to hypertension, three to old age/general debility and two to brain disease. There were eight isolated cases registered. They were: diabetes, hypothyroidism, electrolyte imbalance, kidney failure, liver disease, hemiparesis, myasthenia gravis and multi organ failure. The youngest age at death was 49, the eldest, 97. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of March, in Bombay, was 77 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
