Babies born, marriages solem-nized and deaths that primarily occurred between the 1st and 15th of May 2007 have been mentioned herewith. Interfaith marriages taken place between January to April 2007 as well as names of Zoroastrians who have opted for cremation as their last fu-nerary rites have also been published in this issue.

Names of contracting parties marrying out of the community have been culled from the registers seen at the Old Customs House (OCH) at Fort and at the MHADA office in Bandra (East). However, those names that could not be identified as Zoroastrian have been deleted.

Interfaith unions numbered 20 at both places, the OCH and at MHADA, whereas the civil marriages count was five and two respectively.

Six Zoroastrians did not wish to be consigned to the Doonger-wadi and opted to be cremated at the Chandanwadi crematorium during the four month period.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 33 and 37 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 34 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 35 and 41 years, averaging at 38 years.

Two Zoroastrian babies were born during the 15 day period (as per the birth list that Parsiana gets from two south Bombay hospitals) as versus 27 bodies that were consigned to the Bombay Towers of Silence. Nine Zoroastrians fell prey to heart disease, six of whom were in their 80s and above. The other killers were old age/general debility (five), cancer (four) and pnuemonia/lung disease and septicemia (two each). The isolated causes of deaths reported were arthritis, nervous disorder, brain disease and hypertrophy (increase in the size of tissues). Fifty-four and 95 were the lowest and highest ages at death. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the former half of May, in Bombay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
