Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the first 15 days of the new year are published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 19 and 40 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 46 years, averaging at 30 years.

As per the data from two south Bombay hospitals there were five births reported for the first half of January 2007 as versus 44 deaths. Sixteen Zoroastrians fell prey to the major killer, heart disease, of whom 11 were in the 80+ age category. The other killers were lung disease/pneumonia (five), brain disease and septicemia (four each) and kidney failure, diabetes and hypertension (two victims each). Eight isolated cases were registered. They being: gastroenteritis, liver disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, hemiplegia, shock and haemorrhage due to multiple injuries, cancer and old age/general debility. A three-year-old baby boy was lost to the community. A 101-year-old male also breathed his last. The coroner’s report was kept pending in the case of one death. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the former half of January, in Bombay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
