Milestones

Births, marriages and deaths taken place primarily in the first 15 days of February 2007 are published herein.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 46 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 27 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 24 and 54 years, averaging at 30 years.

As per the data from two south Bombay hospitals there were six births reported for the first half of February 2007 as versus 27 deaths. Eight victims fell prey to heart disease. Seven of them were in the 80+ age category. Pneumonia/lung disease took the lives of seven Zoroastrians while two patients each succumbed to hypertension, septicemia, brain disease and general debility/old age. The isolated cases were: orchitis (inflammation of the testicles), liver disease, gangrene, septic shock, Creutz-Feld Jakob disease and cancer. A 102-year-old was lost to the community. The youngest to perish was a 54-year-old. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the former half of February, in Bombay, was 80 years.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anju-mans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anju-mans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
