This Milestones column carries births, marriages and deaths taken place in the first 15 days of February.

The age of Zoroastrian brides (as listed in this issue) ranged between 22 and 55 years, the arithmetic mean (the total number of individual ages divided by the total number of brides) being 28 years. The corresponding figures for the grooms were 25 and 60 years, averaging at 30 years.

Twenty-nine Zoroastrian bodies were interred at Bombay’s Doongerwadi in the first half of February of which 11 died due to diseases of the heart. Six of those 11 were octogenarians and nonagenarians. The other killers were: cancer (four), old age/general debility (three) and pneumonia/lung disease (two). Brain disease, liver disease, septicemia, kidney failure, multi organ failure, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), hypertenstion and motor neuron disease were the reported isolated causes of deaths. The coroner’s report was kept pending in one alleged case of homicide. Ninety-nine years was the highest age at death. The lowest: 44 years. The Zoroastrian life expectancy at birth for the first 15 days of February, in Bombay, was 77 years. Five births were reported at the two hospitals that Parsiana gets details from.

The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by two hospitals — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the breakup of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
