Births cut a sorry figure for the month of March. Intimation of only two births was received by Parsiana from one south Bombay hospital that sends in data. Deaths at Bombay’s Doongerwadi numbered 48.
Various disease of the heart took the lives of nine patients, of whom eight had crossed their 80 year milestone. While cancer and old age/general debility felled seven Zoroastrians each, five succumbed to pneumonia/lung disease. Three community members each were victims of brain disease and kidney failure. Multi organ failure and septicemia were the causes of two deaths each. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Crohn’s disease (inflammation of the lower 3/5ths of the small intestine), anemia, gangrene, obesity, hemiplegia (paralysis of one side of the body), bed sores, hypertension, diabetes and uremia were sited as isolated cases of death. The eldest to breathe her last was a female, two years short of her centenary; the youngest, a 35-year-old male. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for March 2016 in Bombay was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
