Due to the courts being closed for the summer holidays, Parsiana could not access the names of the couples who tied the knot in March and April. The same will be published in a forthcoming issue.
The last few names of those deceased in the end of May 2016 find mention here as well as those who passed away till June 9.
Data on only three births in Bombay (from one south Bombay hospital) for May was received by Parsiana while 73 deaths were reported from Doongerwadi (information supplied by the Bombay Parsi Punchayet).
Taking the lives of 25 Zoroastrians was the killer disease — of the heart. Of these 17 were octogenarians and nonagenarians. Pneumonia/lung disease felled nine victims, whereas cancer took down seven. The other killers were: old age/general debility (six), brain disease (five), Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and hypertension (three each) and gastroenteritis and septicemia (two each). Hyperthyroidism (excessive production of the thyroid gland hormone), dementia, kidney failure, urosepsis, colitis (inflammation of the colon), hypothyroidism (deficiency of thyroid secretion), liver disease and Alzheimer’s disease were isolated causes of deaths. A lady succumbed to multiple injuries sustained due to a fall from the stairs. Ninety-seven was the eldest age at death; the youngest: 47. The mean age at death of Zoroastrians for May 2016 in Bombay was 81 years.
The data on births, marriages and deaths has been compiled from information supplied by various newsletters and anjumans in India and abroad, courts and hospitals. This information is not always complete or consistent: we are unable to carry data from areas where the anjumans do not furnish the particulars; the birth figures for Bombay are supplied by one hospital — births in suburban hospitals and private nursing homes are not included unless individuals send us information together with a copy of the birth certificate. There may be an inadvertent repetition of names in the marriage list when a civil marriage precedes a religious ceremony. In the break-up of deaths according to illnesses, especially of the elderly, death is often due to a combination of several diseases.
